Kudos to you for saving this little fellow. Do you have any idea why he seemed to come out of the egg with the mouth problem? Could he have got some matter from the egg stuck in his mouth that began to rot and caused the infection? Very odd. That you were even able to figure out what was the problem and then go ahead and fix it is amazing.
