refrigerators dying?

Do refrigerators die? Went into my back studio apt to let my dogs out after work and smelled something awful--thought one of the dogs got sick. Turns out it was what once were frozen mice, now thawed and rotting. There was no outside damage to the fridge (thought maybe the dogs did something to it), the lights still came on, and the temp setting was right. Just no cold/freezing air in fridge or freezer. $250 worth of wasted mice to top off a crappy day at work. Yay!
