I was about to reply with some snide, but mostly humorous remark about overbreeding for specialty traits. (Glad that nobody does that to Humans! At least not that we know of.) Then I saw what you had done. Got me!
I like to see the locale-specific breeding myself, for preservation of wild bloodlines such as Conjuncta & Nitida. (And, like that marvelous Splendida/Holbrooki intergrade above.) Certain wild populations of many animals may only survive in the near-term years because of captive breeding programs.
I know of a man with at least 11 breeding pairs of Russian (Central Asian) Tortoises. As the dictators of Uzbekistan & nearby Stans continue to allow their brisk sales & depletion, wild populations may not survive even a decade longer.
