I have only kept a handful of tortoises, focusing mainly on turtles since the climate is not hospitable to most species. I have kept Testudo horsfieldi (Russian tortoises) and Testudo hermanni here. For a couple years I hibernated the T. horsfieldi outdoors on a well-drained hillside that I ammended with course sand to improve drainage. I then kept them indoors in large opaque cement mixing tubs with a clay/sand mixture for much of the year. I did the same with the T. hermanni. Email me at graziano DOT 6 AT osu DOT edu if you'd like to talk more about chelonian care in Ohio. [ Hide Replies ]
