The species name for the Gulf Coast Toad was recently changed on behalf of nomenclature systematics. I don't recall what it is now.



The exposure is somewhat foggy as the picture was taken mid-day and the camera was pulled from an indoor temperature in the seventies and abruptly exposed to the outdoor ambient temperature over ten degrees warmer. This was the second or third shot taken, the rest being so cloudy as to look like they are depicting dream toads. This specimen was photographed in early August, if I recall correctly without checking.



The pictured animal is a male that had a particularly attractive red hue. In the part of East Baton Rouge Parish where this animal was snapped, a large percentage of metamorphs exhibit the red hues, but it seems as though the brown/tan mixtures have a stronger survival rate, as they predominate as grown specimens. The animal in the photograph dwelled underneath one particular tub for a long time. Since hurricane cleanup began, it has not been apparent. A couple of the first "generation" of metamorphs from this year have remained stationary, despite extensive damage to vegetation in the area. The resiliance of these spongey little guys never ceases to impress.
