Since you have the Nikon N55, why wouldn't you get into the Nikon D70s instead? Then you could buy lenses/flashes that worked with both your film and digital bodies and save money while maximizing the flexibility of your system? Seems like a no-brainer since the D70s is a very good camera.
I don't know about the D50, but I suspect it is also a very worthy camera.
Just for reference, the D70s is a better camera than the original D-rebel because of its faster flash sync, better ergonomics, better image, quality, faster response, etc., etc., etc. The rebel XT is a worthy contender, the original rebel isn't.
