Posted by: ErikH at Fri Sep 23 03:16:25 2005 [ Email Message ] [ Show All Posts by ErikH ] It will be pretty bad a long way off from the center of it,I'm in Birmingham,AL and Katrina at her closest point was probably 120 miles or more away, and that was after she had moved inland and weakened to a minimal hurricane, almost down to a tropical storm. There were trees down everywhere, and a few houses were destroyed by trees falling on them.I went out to the store and got there just as it was closing,on the way home I watched a stop sign get flattened down against the ground.Had to drive about 5 miles an hour to keep the truck from blowing around. My power blinked off about 20 times, but amazingly it never stayed out until the next day after it was over,it went out almost everywhere else though.Stayed out for almost a week in a few places around here.Hurricane Opal back in the 90s was still officially a category 1 hurricane when what was left of the eye came through here, and I dont remember the damage being nearly as bad as what katrina did. With this one there is talk of possible spin off tornadoes as far east as here in Birmingham! This is definately NOT a stay inside and have a hurricane party storm!I've been in a lot of those, but this one is gonna really be bad for wherever it lands and for a long way on either side of it.If you have to go snake hunting,go a couple hundred miles away from it,before it hits.I can remember one time one was still out in the gulf, don't remember the name of it,but the snakes were going crazy here around Birmingham, found like 2 or 3 each pass on a 2 mile stretch of road, driving back and forth. Most were copperheads though, but still,by the time you turned around to go back, there would be 2 or 3 more new ones crossing the road.Never seen anything like it since. | ||
