To the original poster, if you aren't comfortable with rattlers, then give them distance if you should encounter one in the field. You've got to respect these snakes; they are incredibly interesting. And I hope your pickled rattlesnake head is from a roadkill or something..



I've been bitten once by a banded rock rattler, fortunately a dry bite. I've been barely nicked by a sidewinder. Both small snakes, both a case of me getting too close but not paying close attention.



Had I maintained a safe distance, I wouldn't have had the above experiences. It is that simple really. Never had an issue when I used tongs.
