You should probably take the temp on the surface where the pad is warming the cage. It gives the proper basking temperature.



Also, one thing you might want to consider is turning the heat off altogether, especially if you're cooling them.



Another thing most people overlook. You might want to take the snakes' temperature with a lazer heat gun. This gives you an idea of the internal body heat of the snake, and not the environment. Just a thought.
