As I said earlier, you often need to explore deeper than what field guides present you with. "Turtles of the United States and Canada" and "Salamanders of the United States and Canada" by Petranka are both amazing resources in that they compile scientific data into one species entry, along with the citations for the data so that, should you choose to, you have the information to go back and review their sources.
