If you could provide a photograph of the animal, it would be most helpful. Being in New York, you have both midland and eastern painted turtles (Chrysemys picta marginata and C. p. picta, respectively). 8" is incredibly large for either subspecies of painted turtle; more likely than not you have a redear slider (Trachemys scripta elegans). I would suggest trying to contact a turtle rehoming organization. There are plenty of contacts in that area of NY; you could try www.turtlehomes.org. It is a nice group that rehomes animals. I would look for Lori Green - she's a friend of mine and lives in Long Island and the president of Turtle Homes. There is also the New York Turtle and Tortoise Society (http://nytts.org/) - you could email someone there and ask about rehoming. Other options could actually be a good animal shelter/humane society. In any event, I personally think it would be in the best interest of the animal to avoid shipping it, especially at this time of year. Hope that helps,
~Mike
