It is illegal to sell native reptiles in California. You are allowed to collect two with the purchase of a fishing license. You can apply for and obtain a captive propagation permit if you want to breed which I believe would allow you to keep up to 30 (you're still only allowed 2 wild caughts). Even with the permit you will not be able to sell offspring and any recipient of your offspring must stay within their bag limit (2). Witout the permit, I think you have 45 days to dispose of any offspring that put you over the two alligator lizard limit. Release of offspring or wild caughts that have been taken into captivity is illegal without special permission from the CDFG.
