Two general rules-of-thumb when it comes to snake keeping:
1) Snakes crave security and a baby snake will feel much more secure in a small enclosure, like a plastic shoebox.
2) Don't handle snakes until they are on a regular feeding schedule. Handling stresses out snakes - especially wild ones.
Most baby racers will take crickets. I'd put one or two crickets in the cage and leave the snake alone.
