obstrep Aug 04, 2008 03:40 PM

ok well I had a friend bring over a snake and well was told it was a corn snakeI argued and argued with my husband it was not a corn snake.I only have burmese pythons so I wouldnt know for sure. Well I posted pics of my new lil guy on another forum only to find out it is a balck racer. I don't mind keepin git none the less as I have had it for about a month now and have tamed it to the point it no longer tries to bite.It just runs around the 10 gallon tank until u catch it to bring it out.But I have a huge problem. What can i get it to eat. I have tried so many things. pinkies f/t, pinkies alive, pinkies brained , crickets, worms even as suggested, o even baby lizards, to no avail I just can't get it to eat any suggestions would be a great help.O its last shedding was 15 1/2 inches long.

coachwhips and racers are pre-programed to eat anything that moves in front of them that will fit down their throat, except baby mice they don't eat them till their adults, and seem to just scare the living s#!# out of them till then. but deep bedding is also nesassary for security (2-3 inches deep) and holding them like a pet is not good, these are the most stressed but the smartiest snake you'll ever own, and maybe after a year of advid eating of small lizards you should be able to hold it for short amounts of time.

Ya i had tried a pinkie id did scare the crap out of it. It finally started eatting crickets, thnks goodness. As far as not being able to handle it well, thats not an issue i can take it out and it sits there waiting no longer does it take off accross the tank. I can hold it and for the mot part just kinda sits there clinging around my fingers kinda like a corn snake. doesnt even try to bite me anymore. it's awesome!! but thanks

You can try adult mice's tails. It's works well sometimes.

Two general rules-of-thumb when it comes to snake keeping:

1) Snakes crave security and a baby snake will feel much more secure in a small enclosure, like a plastic shoebox.

2) Don't handle snakes until they are on a regular feeding schedule. Handling stresses out snakes - especially wild ones.

Most baby racers will take crickets. I'd put one or two crickets in the cage and leave the snake alone.
