With closeup/macro work, manual focus is generally easier. I wouldn't hesitate because the lens is manual focus (unless your eyes are getting bad like mine!).
Do some research into the lens online. A lot of those super zooms aren't sharp. Some of the Nikon ED glass is great, some isn't.
