Drill Baby Drill!
I used to work on dynamically positioned deep water floaters like the one that blew up. Those were first generation that I worked on. Early 1980's. Some of the rigs I worked on are in service today with Transocean. Many companies have merged to become the Transocean of today.
5,000 feet to the wellhead is a BIG problem. Think about the pressures involved that far down. 33 ft. equals one atmosphere.
Their best chance is to build a cofferdam to collect the oil and bring it to the surface, while they drill a relief well or two to plug the old one.
There is quite a bit of talk in the newest HerpDigest about the oil being very detrimental to the Sea Turtles, among other things.
