Where the hell is Nelson and Meeks now that we have A REAL ECOLOGICAL DISATSTER OF UNIMAGINABLE CONSEQUENCES TO DEAL WITH i.e. OIL RIG BLOW UP...This is going to be so bad for Florida it may well bankrupt the state not to mention the enviromental destruction. NO TOURIST ARE GOING TO WANT TO GO TO OUR BEACHES AND TAN ON TOP OF OILY SAND...In the Fl. Panhandle already economically their doing poorly because of it...Maybe he should parade around N. Florida in an OIL CAN COSTUME to call attention just as he wrapped his body in a python skin in the Glades....

Drill Baby Drill!
I used to work on dynamically positioned deep water floaters like the one that blew up. Those were first generation that I worked on. Early 1980's. Some of the rigs I worked on are in service today with Transocean. Many companies have merged to become the Transocean of today.
5,000 feet to the wellhead is a BIG problem. Think about the pressures involved that far down. 33 ft. equals one atmosphere.
Their best chance is to build a cofferdam to collect the oil and bring it to the surface, while they drill a relief well or two to plug the old one.
There is quite a bit of talk in the newest HerpDigest about the oil being very detrimental to the Sea Turtles, among other things.

You didnt hear the spill was caused by an angry burm tring to get away from florida and got caught in the pipe. That in turn caused a tornado in arkansas witch was only because it got tired of hiding in some volcano across the atlantic. It is always a pythons fault speaking of faults..lol.This burm problem is out of hand now we can not stop oil spills tornados earthquakes or volcanos but we can sure as hell stop these rouge pythons before they destroy planet earth.Sad but this is the mentality we are faced with. The only thing that will be stopped is good people making a living doing what they love.As well as our childrens chances of ever enjoying the same life we have. The old saying STOP THE MADDNESS must fit some where around here.

You are right. It won't be long before you need a PhD in order to possess, own, or otherwise interact with wildlife.
When Petco owns the trade it will be a sad day indeed. I'm pretty sure Anoles will still be available for $20.00 each.

BWahaha I almost spit out my coffee! It cracks me up that they sell those darn brown anoles and black racers in Florida PetCo stores! Geez, just go catch one in the parking lot!
Don't forget the Cuban treefrogs. Want to talk about a true environmental pest.
I was very surprised when I moved from Jax. to St.Aug not even 30 miles south and found Cuban Tree Frogs all over the place. I have not heard the first call or seen one yet this season. I really hope they died out here last winter. VM
To you Floridians -- back to the oil spill...
The ecological damage to Florida will be tremendous. I guess that includes the economic damage, as well.
The primary mover of the slick will be and is the GULF STREAM. Most of the oil is suspended at varying depths in the water column.
The Gulf Stream will be delivering the sludge to Florida all summer long and will continue until who knows when. Depends a lot on how quickly they can stop the flow of the leak.
This is going to make Pythons look like diminutive Earth Snakes in comparison.

to do a survey of where the oil will wind up. DC, maybe???
200,000 gallons each day for a couple of months will put some oil into every living creature in all the oceans of the planet. The oil is dispersing, which is actually very bad. It never ever goes away. The oil burned lands in your water supply somewhere. The ten foot thick layer of ooze on the sea floor will be there and gradually spread out to cover the bottom all the way to Cuba. This one oil accident will put this oil into every living creature on earth eventually. How vulnerable are these rigs to a terrorist attack? Imagine a speedboat and a shoulder fired rocket launcher taking out four of these things in one easy attack. Our dependence on this poison is going to wipe humans from this planet. The same people who can’t see that coming also never saw this disaster looming. Worrying about pythons in the Everglades instead of issues like this is just madness. We have got to stop re-electing these knuckleheads.
Unfortunially as long as we keep electing politicans to replace politicans NOTHING IS GONNA CHANGE. We need, and I am completely serious here, a complete overthrow of our government violently if need be we need to take back our government by any means nessasary. The type of government we currently have is exactially what the collinist rebelled against. in any other country there would be massive protest in the streets and a true attempt to take back the country. The politicians/government should be scared of us not the other way around.

I'm not one for playing ostrich and sticking my head in the sand, but this spill is so devastating that I can't even watch the news. It's such a feeling of helpless as a native Floridian to watch our wildlife suffer a true disaster. My teens and I are waiting to see if a volunteer opportunity awaits us. Hopefully we will still enjoy the Keys as we do each summer, boating, exploring, kayaking, and snorkeling the reefs.
If they need volunteers to do anything I'm willing to do whatever is possible for me to do...
