I feed mine Superworms and Nightcrawlers. Superworms are fairly easy to culture (I've had a colony for a couple years). I just keep the Nightcrawlers in the refrigerator - I do not culture them. It sound like the compost worms you're talking about are manure worms. Most herps either won't eat them or spit them out after eating them.
