Ambystoma Tigrinum feeding?

herp-keeper Jun 09, 2010 10:39 AM

I'm looking to start my own culture of whatever staple I provide for my Tiger Salamander. However, that staple being earthworms, I'm having trouble finding worm cultures that are not COMPOSTING worms from farms nearby. Does anybody know if they can or has anybody tried feeding their Ambystoma Tigrinum composting worms? They're the tough red ones. I think earthworms would be a better bet but if they can/do eat composting worms then it would be a win-win situation from both a composting and feeding point of view. Thanks!

Compost worms probably wont work because they sectrete noxious mucus that smells and tastes horrible. You can just obtain a bunch of local worms from a chemical-free area. Crickets are a good food source for tigers too. Earthworms are better though.

I feed mine Superworms and Nightcrawlers. Superworms are fairly easy to culture (I've had a colony for a couple years). I just keep the Nightcrawlers in the refrigerator - I do not culture them. It sound like the compost worms you're talking about are manure worms. Most herps either won't eat them or spit them out after eating them.
