For the burrow, you can always place dark paper over the glass and then lift it to see the frog if he's in the burrow. Wild toads seem to become tame quite quickly and will come and approach their owner in anticipation of being fed - so they don't always act "natural."
I use a soil, dried crushed leaves, sand mix for substrate. I keep my plants in pots so the toads won't dig them up. Pothos is the easiest plant to grow in these situations.
