What do you think about a 30g?

PHRatz Apr 29, 2006 01:45 PM

With my DH working all the freakin' time I don't know when we're ever going to manage to get to that other town 110 miles away for a 40g breeder tank.
Someone today advertised in the newspaper that he/she has a 30 gallon tank for sale with stand & everything for 40 dollars more than that 40g breeder costs. If we go get the 40g we'll spend at least 40 bucks on gas anyway.
Do you think a 30g is large enough for one yellow mud?

Is it large enough? Yes.
Would it be better to have something larger? Yes.
But then, if you went out and got a 75 gallon tank for Scooter, there would be those who would argue that a 125 would be even better...which would be true.
Having said all of this, it sounds like the 30 gallon is better than what you now have and also is quite a bit easier to do right now.
Go for it. The 40 gallon can wait till next year.

I agree with that.. I've always been one to say that the bigger the enclosure the better. My painted moved into a 55L in Jan. he's about 4 & 3/4 inches long. He's full grown, he's loving this new tank but I can see that yes 100 gallon would be really nice for him. He seems happy in the 55 though & it is better than what he moved out of.

I don't want Scooter feeling cramped but when I saw this 30 gallon long well.. I went for it lol.
I did it because yes it is better than what he's in right now. It's a nice tank, looks almost new. It's been well cared for, came with the stand, the light-hood fixture, a filter that I won't use because my canister is better. It came with an extra airation (sp) system too that may end up in the painted's tank.

The stand was clean as a whistle as was the tank. So for 40 dollars more than the 40 gallon that we haven't had time to get, Scooter will be in his new home as soon as I get the ramp & hide box that I want for him.

This 30 will fit under the 55 gallon on the stand I already have as we'd planned originally.. the stand I got with the 30 is just gravy & I have other plans for it's use. I'm happy, not as happy as I want to be but this set up will get him out of the turtle ghetto & will do for now.
Thanks for the input!

The larger space is good for now and one day you can upgrade.
Plus, those stinkin' muddies live for about 60 years so you have some time.
Also, the extra aeration helps with keeping the water circulated and filtered. Use it in the painted tank or the mud turtles as both would benefit.

heh heh yeah it was a good idea. I'm thinking the aeration should go in the painted tank because in the corner away from the filter solid stuff tends to collect, the water there isn't moving enough.
It won't take months to get the furniture I want for Scooter the mud so that he can move in soon, that stuff is easy to mail order. I just hope he likes it after going to all this trouble.

I ordered furniture for Scooter, it's an acrylic ramp with a lower platform and then a higher basking platform. It's very smooth & hopefully will work, I also ordered a hide box to put on the lower platform.
I'm still waiting for it so Scooter hasn't moved into his new tank just yet.
Hopefully it'll get here by tomorrow so he can move over the weekend.
Now that I have this new tank I'm about to bust!! I just can't wait to get him into the new home!
