Captive Longevity?

rkhorne Oct 16, 2006 09:56 AM

Anyone know where we can find captive longevity records for all the sub-species? It would also be really nice to know the setup & regiment that goes along with each record. I remember reading somewhere that a european (German I believe) claimed 18 years on a Horned Lizard. If that's true, I for one would sure like to know that setup & regiment!

Baur, B. 1986. Longevity of horned lizards of the genus Phrynosoma. Bulletin of the Maryland Herpetological Society 22(3):149-151

Bertrand Baur from Switzerland holds the longevity record for most the HL species. You are right a P. mcalli lived 18 years in captivity. He told me natural sunlight, proper lighting cycles, proper temperature cycles, ants in the diet and small prey are the key. He feeds his HLs ants from the genus lasius, small crickets, and occasionally small grasshoppers and small freshly shed small mealworms. Of course offering water regularly is also key.

You also might check with Dr. Milroy I believe he had a study group for 10 year and I may be mistaken but I think one of them had lived for 10 years and may even be alive now, Cornatum from California if I remember right.........

Many of us have had HL's for 4 years or so.......

I'm from Tucson, and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum keeps Regal Horned Lizards in an outdoor enclosure, according to my husband. I don't know the diet, but I have to assume there are ants in the enclosure or readily available (how to transfer >100 ants into an enclosure for a meal would be beyond me!).
