Red head anole, is she rare?

skmcwilliams Oct 19, 2006 04:52 PM

I have been living among anoles for 20 years but have never seen one with this red of a head. I caught her today, my husband was getting ready to spray chemicles on to our lawn so I wanted to get her out of danger. Is she rare to have this red of a head? Anyone else have one like her? Thanks

I have never seen one like that either and lots of anoles in Miami .

I never saw one like that before, I got quite a few picture books about anoles, and I cant find anything in those.

Out of interest did you let her go, or did you keep her?

She's a very pretty little thing, though my hubby said "Oh no she's burned her head, the poor thing" (LMAO)

Hi

Thanks for all comments, Yes I still have her, she looked a bit skinny when I got her so have been fattening her up with dusted crickets and have her in a pretty cool set up, and she seems as happy as a lark in there, and getting fatter for sure.

Her head is still just as red as the pic but is definately not a burn but just a deep orange color. I may hold on to her and see if ther are any nice males to pair her up to, maybe this orange head could be given to offspring?

Hi There,
I'm new here. There is a red headed female on our lanai in Naples, FL. I call her Rusty(unfortunately, as mentioned in my other post today, I've not seen her in a few days, but that's another story...) I've been observing lizards for a while, and I was really excited when I saw her for the 1st time in June of '05. I'd never seen anything like her! Then, a few months ago, when I bent down to pick up the newspaper on my driveway, I saw ANOTHER red headed anole - this one was a young-un, about 1/2 size. Days later, I saw a TEENY TINY little one on the lanai, hanging out about 3 feet from Rusty. I got out the binoculars and lo and behold, it was a perfect little replica of Rusty herself! I named her "Mini Me". So, I believe it is very possible your fabulous redhead could produce a replica too!

They are young brown anoles i saw a few today in Fort Pirce just a color morph as they get older it fades but it doesn't go away perminatly. I believe they are the second subspecies of brown anole.

At least she looks like a GREEN anole, but the diamond pattern along her spine is more like that of a BROWN anole, maybe she's a cross breed of some description?

Glad she's doing better now, and fattening up, it is often difficult to heal a sick anole, but the proof is in the pudding, I wish you all the best

She does look like part green & part brown, with that green tint and indistinct diamond pattern. The 3 redheads I've seen at my place (all girls) look exactly like brown anoles, with with light stripes and very clear diamond patterns, but they have the rusty red heads. I named the first one I saw "Rusty" after the Ann-Margarete character in Viva Las Vegas. For a while, little Rusty had a boyfriend, & I called him "Elvis"!

My anoles dont have names, I have too many for that, though I guess I could name them after the 7 dwarves, lol (I have 7 green anoles), but something peculiar......

I have a C.Bicinctores called Elvis, but she's a girl. Named because she does this crazy leg shaking thing when she stretches out in the morning.

This is her.....

Your Elvis is a beauty! Thanks for posting the pics. Maybe you could teach her to do the lip curl while she's doing all that shakin'! In years past we've had some fabulous green anoles on the lanai, and of course, I named them all - Kermie, Hermie, Hermina (Hermie's chick) and the very gorgeous Elusive Limey Boy, who was aptly named. Here's a suggestion - how about naming your green gang after the 7 deadly sins!

The heads turn red during mating season. I thought only males turned red, are you sure it is a female?

I saw one for the first itme today. It's why I found this site (Google serach for Red Head Anole). The one I saw had a much more mellow red color but otherwise identical.

skmcwilliams -- do you mind if I use your photo on my website? Be glad to give you credit or a link to your site if you have one.

I keep kind of a blog about all the new things I learn and see since moving to Port Charlotte, FL.
