New to photography...

retickeeper Oct 24, 2006 07:19 PM

Hello everyone. I've been keeping snakes for almost 10 years now but just starting to get interested in photography. I'm going to try and post a pic on here. If it works I would really appreciate any tips or ideas that might help me out in the future. My camera is a Canon Rebel and I'm still trying to get used to all the buttons and features on it. Hopefully my skills will improve over time. If not, I'll have fun trying. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

looks pretty good to me, if I were to look at it critically, I would suggest using a higher F-stop (might like a little more depth of field) and I would clone out that sprig of thyme or whatever it is that is in focus just behind his tongue. I might have framed it with more dead space to his left (right side of the frame); it looks like he is looking at something, but i think a little more of the frame is needed in order to really convey that message. Keep shooting, you're certainly doing a lot better than most people who are self-proclaimed newbies.

I really appreciate the advice! Now hopefully I can take those ideas and apply them the next time I get a chance to snap some pictures. Now that you've pointed those things out they seem so obvious to me, but I couldn't see it before. Feel free to add anything else that could use some improving. I'm definitely not expecting to become a professional overnight but those pointers will certainly help me next time out. Thanks again for the help. Hopefully I'll be able to post some new photo's soon!

I'm impressed. Just by the fact you got that close to a wild racer

That would be a great shot of a racer, but instead it is a black rat snake (or eastern rat snake).
