found a salamander info please

iluvmysuber Nov 01, 2006 05:22 PM

hi, my son found a very small (about the size of your pinky) salamander. i have now idea about salamanders, how to take care of them, or what kind it even is. we live in ct, & the kids would love to add him/her to our family of pets. i was just wondering if this is a yellow spotted salamander, & if it would be easy to keep happy, & healthy? thank you in advance for any information.

It is a Spotted salamander(Ambystoma maculatum).

Since you said that you are not familiar with salamanders it is best to let him/her go.

Get familiar with salamander biology and their care and then think about what species you would like to care for.

Best of Luck

It is a spotted salamander. the gold flecks will form more into spots as it gets older. At the size/age of the one in the photo, they are very difficult to keep alive if you have no experience in young sallies. Finding a good food source of the appropriate size can be difficult at times. You are better off letting it go.

thank you. on top of the usual 2 dogs, a cat, 3 fish, we also have 2 iguanas, an albino corn snake, a tortiose & 3 degus, so a salamander is really not a neccessity. it is doing well now, this is day 3, but my son said he will let it back outside after school. thanks again. jenn
