Pics of the eggs for Marcia

EMWhite Nov 10, 2006 10:34 PM

Marcia,
Here is the picture of the eggs, man were they hard to photograph. They kept looking all white, the freckles got lost in the flash. If you need another picture, just let me know.

You're right, I don't much see freckles, unless you are talking the speckles on the sides where they are close to the coir fiber. It can discolor the eggs and in my opinion it is hard to monitor the moisture using coir fiber, it stays pretty moist. I really prefer perlite. The eggs stay a bit dryer while the moisture is more in the lower layers and the air around them. I have successfully incubated in coir though so it can be done.

I really don't worry unless the eggs get sticky or slimy and turn yellow, pink, or orange. They usually get a smell like urine or amonia too if they are bad.

Marcia,
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Hopefully the eggs will be fine, they still look eggish, so I won't worry. About the coconut fiber, I have just used it in the past with success, so I trusted it again. But, if I am lucky like this in future, I will switch over to perltite. Thanks again.

Very descriptive Marcia

I had eggs this last clutch that turned brown and I was sure they wouldn't hatch but they did. I used vermiculite the first time and perlite next. I got some Hatch Rite to try but it looks like perlite with water crystals (?) in it. You are supposed to not have to add water to it. We'll see.
