I started out with two firebellies, what I thought were male and female, since one of them had eggs once. I figured out what one was female because the mucusy substance with tiny black dots was covering her after it happened. The male sadly passed away, and for a while, she was alone. She'd occasionally make soft barking noises, which made me think that maybe the female had passed and the male was alive. I have recently gotten another one, and the one I thought was the female promptly started humping the new one. Not ten minutes later, the new one started humping the female. They were both making crazy barking and squeaking noises that I thought only males made. I thought that they might have both been males until tonight, when I seen some of the same mucusy stuff with black dots on one of the fake plants. I didn't see who was being humped, but now I know one of them is a girl. The problem is they both hump each other and both make noises. Anyone have any ideas?

Only males are supposed to croak. Two males will "hump" each other if the one on top of the aplex mistakes the other one for a female. However, if there are eggs then maybe you were mistaken in which toad was croaking.
