Female laying eggs?

bindymcj Dec 05, 2006 11:58 PM

Ok, here's my problem! I was wondering if a female can lay part of her clutch and then still be gravid for at least 1 month and lay more eggs??

My female laid 5 eggs on Nov 9. I have a removeable divider for my tank and as soon as my female laid, I seperated my pair so that my male didn't breed her again right after (he has a habit of doing that). However, females are supposed to lay 8 - 16 eggs and mine always has, until now. So that was a little concerning but she acted like that was all she had to lay - she buried them and even ate the same day like normal so I thought that was it. Then I noticed my male doing the head bob at her through the glass divider to show his interest. I have read that when females are gravid they will move their heads in small circles to show the male that they are not able to be bred again. And I have seen this behavior between the 2 whenever she is pregnant. But since she laid the 5 eggs she has been doing that behavior to him whenever he does the head bob! SO that leads me to believe that she is still gravid. But it is now Dec 5 and she hasn't even made a move to the nesting box to dig or anything. Should I be worried that she is egg bound? She is acting completely normal in every other aspect and she looks healthy. She eats and drinks well and nothing else has changed. So I am just curious if it is possible that she will lay more eggs or did she just get smart and do the circles so that he won't breed her every chance he gets?? I hope she just got smart!!

I dont think it matters if she is gravid or not when she is circling her head. If you dont want the interaction then remove the male from site. Otherwise you have to expect them in have the same interaction as they would without the divider. They dont understand glass. If your female is healthy and fa enough she can double clutch, even triple. I have had this happen.
If she is egg bound then she will stop eating but usually by this time she is done. If your that worried about it take her to the vet and get her scanned with ultra sound..
good luck
