What is a ruthven

smilnred77 Dec 06, 2006 09:38 PM

I've seen this a couple of times. What is a ruthven?

I've read some where astro turf is a good floor cover for a kingsnakes aquarium. Any input? Persoanlly Jake likes to burrow so I don't know how much he'd like it. But when i was concidering it I was thinking about cleaning convienence. Anyone try it?

A ruthven is a type of kingsnake. Ruthven's Kingsnake or sometimes known as Queretaro Mountain Kingsnake. They are really beautiful snakes I have 2.2 Albinos right looking to part with a pair actually.

Okay, so my snake is not a ruthven. I googled it and found picutes of a wide banded king. So...can anyone give me more info on my snake? All I was told by the store is that he is rare and will get up to 4 feet. How often should I handle him? I love to hold him but I don't want to over-handle him. I've never had a pet snake--only catch and released previously.

Yup, it's an albino cal king (Lavender and white.).
As far as handling goes, it's snake specific with cal kings.
Some don't seem to mind, and enjoy handling.
Some will resist handling and freak out every time they see movement.
They tend to be a bit headshy when small, but soon 95% of them will see you mean them no harm and will warm up to being handled.
If the snake musks you, they are not enjoying the experience.
You will know what I mean when it happens.

Jake musks every time. When we first got him he would strike out at everyone. but we started handling him every day and he stopped striking but he would still musk. Now we don't handle him as often and he's begun striking again. I need to put him in a more assessable area so we can remember to hold him more often.

Thanks!
