New to site and a new owner

I acquired Izzard from a friend in October ’06 and this is my first time having a Tegu. I am not really sure if he is a B&W or what? I have already bought 2 heating mats, timers, flourescent light, heating light, new bedding, new hide aways/platforms and new decorations for the tank. He/she is currently in a glass tank- I think it’s a 50 gallon one (it is 2 feet long). I take him out once in awhile to walk around and to socialize with him. Very mellow and lazy. I usually feed meal worms, night crawlers, tegu/monitor diet, tegu/monitor bites and he especially loves a whole egg mashed up and scrambled. Don’t know if I want to do the whole mice thing. I also got some calcium dust to dust the food with. I tried crickets once- he didn’t seem to do very well with catching those and he really likes bologna lunch meat. Any other suggestions on what I can try...? Thanks.

Go to the link for AGAMA International and read what it has to say about diet and other things.

You might want to get an inexpensive infra-red thermometer to make sure you have the right temps. I have a PE-1 and it works great. You can purchase them here: http://www.deerfernfarms.com/Supplies.htm

Make sure your flourescent lights are the kind that provide UVB light. They use UVB to convert pre-vitamin D in their skin into active vitamin D3 which is then used in regulating the absorption and metabolic deposition of calcium. I have used the Arcadia from deerfernfarms and it's been great. Lasts longer than typical 4' tube. Just make sure you mount it so that it is close enough to be useful.
