I just read on this care sheet http://www.turtletary.com/redfootcare.htm that you don't need a UV bulb for red foots? Is this true, this is the first time I've ever heard this.

If you fed a 100% correct and balanced diet then theoretically you wouldn't need a UVB light. IMO better safe then sorry and use one.

Thanks, I think I'll stick with my UV light.

I am in Northeast - redfoots out day and night through three to four months - inside rest of year with no supplemental lighting - perfect growth even in actively growing juveniles
despite not optimal humidity

diet critical factor

Can you give me a rough outline of your Redfoot's diet? Thanks!

concur with drtom -
have material with specifics on diet but wouldn't know how to get them to you -
mas importante provide varied diet - strongly recommend Andy Highfield at Tortoise Trust also Mike Pingleton's redfoot book

afterthought: Highfield's Tortoise Trust publications stress varied diet and care not to overfeed -
only feed mine once or twice a week overwinter inside

Agree with last post. Also live in Northeast (CT) redfoot for 24 years. No pyramiding. Never used UVB. Outside just June thru August. I do you UVB with my babies but more because it provides a soft light under which they are more active. They do not care for basking lights. Will bask under ceramic heater but never under bright light even if temps the exact same.

My Cherry head refoots bask everyday uva/uvb heat bulbs. THey need to bask though redfoots prefer some shade in the environment.
