Do you need information on their care or a website to buy them from?

That was the first species of snake that I had as a kid! in Ft. Lauderdale,FL....I caught them fairly often down there. Just recently I saw one in a pet store here in Central Florida. They had it labeled as a "Green Ratsnake"!!LOL. I told the lady there what it was,"Opheodrys aestivus" as I sell her different snakes from time to time....she said "no wonder it isn't eating any of the pinkies I put in there!!...I explained that they are insectivores and do very well on crickets, grasshoppers, roaches, and so on.......I've seen them in other shops now and then too, usually going for around fifteen bucks.....I don't know anyone that breeds them though, as they aren't too popular as compared to the many other species on the market. They did well in captivity for me, even as a young kid. But I treated them very gently and read about them as much as I could...they do well in a taller cage that allows them to climb............Doug

That's pretty hard to say for sure, it could have been a number of things,....we don't know how long the other source had them, fed them(if at all),temp they were kept at, knocked around in warehouse, etc.........they could have been not fed at all, and highly stressed-out, it's impossible to say.......did your snakes look nice and healthy, fairly round, or was their spine noticably pronounced, skin folded and thin?....they could have been kept in an aquarium with fifty of them all piled together. Importers, and wholesalers don't give one hoot about the well being of anything, they just want the majority to survive long enough to make some money.....but if they look nice and bright green, with vivid yellow belly, and are moved into a vivarium with some branches, and places to hide, kept in a kind of "tropical" setting with a mist from a spray bottle maybe once a day, they should do fine. Provided they are okay to begin with..........hope this helps ..........................Doug

it was limp and didn't move much!!!!!LOL.....that is a VERY clear indicator that a snake is on it's way out!!. Probably being kept just like I mentioned in my above post....If a snake feels strong with some muscle tone, and moves around as you hold it, the odds are it is fairly healthy. Stay away from the very inactive, limp ones........it's pretty upsetting how some people treat animals..........My motto is,...."if you can't take care of it, you have no business owning it".........also,...when you acquire a new snake(especially wholesalers/importers) make sure you look at the gap around the eyes, underneath in between the scales on the throat, as well as the body for mites(black dots) and ticks, as these are very bad for the snake...anyway,...good luck,....................................................Doug

Everytime I'm seen them in pet shops around here they feed them goldfish. This always confuses me because green snakes have always readily eaten crickets for me, and crickets are readily available in pet shops so why not just feed the green snakes crickets?

They also insist on feeding their ribbonsnakes CRICKETS! I usually just get mad and leave before saying anything.
