Southern California CWD rescue??

MaureenCarpenter Feb 16, 2007 03:12 PM

Yesterday a friend of mine called me in desperation because her boss "dumped" a full grown, very tame, CWD on her saying "Circumstances in my life have changed and I can't keep this animal anymore, so YOU take care of it." Well, the poor thing has a bad arm infection and tip-of-nose desintigration, and, I suspect, a slight case of mouth rot. I showed her how to medicate it with Baytril and a dropper,(the medicine has been there but nobody has been giving it!), and this AM, when I went back to dose it again, pus spurted out of the upper arm. We bathed it in warm water and salt and massaged the arm until the pus seemed gone and blood flowed clean from the wound. I
told her to soak it as many times a day as possible. It is eating. It needed more heat in the basking spot, (accomplished), and, although a little thin, seems to have the will to live and does not seem in pain. I do not know how to take care of CWD's, and my friend knows less than I. HELP! We live in Southern California. We love animals, but can't give this sweet thing what it needs. Is there a CWD Rescue near us?

Maureen,

Sounds awful. I don't know what they are willing to do, but I frequent the Amazon Reptile Center in the Inland Valley. They often have animals that they take in and try to rehabilitate. They also have a knowledgable and caring staff. This animal might be a little more than they want to commit to, but they might be able to point you in the right direction. They are listed in the Breeders/Dealers/Stores section above. Good luck!

Thank you so much for answering my desperate message. I will try them. He sure is a hungry guy! I hope he survives. Again, thanks for the tip on Amazon Pet Center!

Just keeping in touch! We have been medicating, soaking, feeding this ailing CWD and it is responding very well!! Dead black skin fell off the arm abcess and bright green new skin is visible underneath. And boy can this guy eat! Crickets, jumbo mealworms, banana, greens. He's gained a lot of weight and is spunky, but after 12 days of medication we are going to stop medicating him. Even his mouth looks better after neosporin. BUT...he is having little shaking spasms. Can this be the medication?? Your knowledge is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey Maureen!

Man, I should have checked here sooner. I've taken in a pair of rescue dragons myself and I can probably help you out. Where in southern california are you? I actually have a cage suitable for one dragon by itself that's just sitting around right now.

If you would rather go the route of an official society or rescue, there's also a san diego based herpetological society that you can find when you go to the forum main page and go to the clubs. They also have a rescue/adoption thing goin.

email me!
