Newt distressed!!

newt_new Feb 28, 2007 08:00 PM

Hi, I've had my 3 newts for 2-3 years now, no problems, but I just bought a new waterfall filter yesterday (tetrafauna reptofilter waterfall) and 2 of them seem to be struggling with the adjustment. Is it because the water is being disturbed, or is that not an issue with newts and they're still getting used to it? Also, how long can newts stay under water?

They could just be getting used to something new but I'm not sure. As for how long they can stay underwater it depends on what kind of newt you have. There are some that live on land, some that arre fully aquatic, and some that do half and half. What kind do you have?

From what I have read and observed, Chinese fire-bellies do not like too much of a current. So, you might be right in that the waterfall is disturbing the water too much for them. Other newts, such as paddletails, are found in running streams and would most likely enjoy the waterfall. Hope this helps.
