Red Foot and a lizard in same tank?

Heat Mar 15, 2007 03:21 PM

Can this be done? If yes, what kind of lizard, anole etc?

I have a 40 gallon tank w/ a UV light & a 100 watt combo uva/b ceramic heat lamp.

It might be possible to house a large lizard with a small to bedium sized redfoot but I would definitely not recomend it. Besides the issues of environmental conditions and disease and parasite transmissions redfoots can be dangerous to smaller animals. With their love of worms and small invertebrates and their taste in non food items (i.e. leather shoes0 I wouldnt be suprized to see one chomp down on a lizards toe.

Tx. I was not planning on it, and now I won't for sure.

It's never good to house different species together because of bacteria that is carried. For instance the redfoot could carry a bacteria that doesn't bother it but could be a pathogen(disease-causing bacteria)to another animal species. Not to mention I just saw a picture of a sulcata chomping down on a lizard it caught outside, on the africantortoise yahoo group.

I'm not recommending this, but I have this roommate situation going on right now. I have two Desert Tort babies who were in for the winter. I have an Eastern Hognose snake who doesn't eat mice, who I was trying to get to switch by scenting with toads. (Without harming the toads, since I love toads.) I couldn't get her to switch, but want to try again in the spring, but was afraid I couldn't find another toad, so I wanted to keep him. So I put him in with the DTs. They run on opposite schedules- while the torts are sleeping at night, Mr. Toad is out doing toad stuff. During the day, while they are out, he generally stays on top of their cool hide. Once in a while I've found him basking under the 95F lamp, though! Here he is with Koko. This actually made me a little nervous, but they've been together since November with no hostilities...

haha cuties!

Last summer when my kids caught toads, we'd put a big fat one in w/ our rf, just for company.

Our tortoise just loves visits from anyone in her cage, especially mice. (yes I clean up any mouse doo I find)
