Do I have a Sulcata????

ekumbu Apr 11, 2007 10:04 AM

Hi, two months ago I got a sulcata, when i received it, it was really small and completly black, I guessed it was because it was a baby, but to be honest it didn't seem like the sulcatas babies that I saw in all the ads here, I expected with the time will be like the ones that I saw in the pics, but nothing, now it got a small change in the color, to lighter, but not like I saw here, it is growing well, and I liked it, but I am curious if I got really a sulcata or what kind of tortoise i got, I sent one mail to the guy that sold it to me, but no response.can someone help me? thx

Ive never seen a black sulcata, im pretty sure it could be something else from how you describe it. If you could post a picture it would be very helpful.

Hmmmmmm........ I see what you mean. I'm no expert. I suppose that COULD be a baby sulcata, but it actually looks more like one of the Testudu species to me. But maybe we're just accustomed to seeing pics of slightly older sulcatas?

Yes you are right, I have one greek and with the time she start to look like her, the color and the shell are really similar, even the foot are not light color are not darker.Thx

Hi. I have bred and hatched sulcata, and the one in your picture is not a sulcata. It looks the most like a Greek or Hermann's Tortoise to me. From whom did you get it? and was that person the breeder or just a middleman who might not know what he had?

Maybe you made out better than you think, because I don't believe the baby sulcata are worth as much as the other species which it seems likely to be.

Can you send picture of the plastron? It might help in the ID of the animal.

Hi, Thank you very much for your help, well I got it from a breeder from California, so I don't think he didn't know what he was sending to me, actually I am working but when I get home I'll take pics of the plastron and post them. The tortoise is nice and I like it, I just want to know what I got, I am new to this world of tortoises, and learning now, not good start but I will keep on the way. Thx again.

almost positive (bottom looks exactly like my Hermanns). You can't see the tip of its tail in the pic but if it has a little spike on the end, you can be sure.
