Common musk? Please help identify

squirrellady Apr 22, 2007 12:20 AM

Hi all, I'm new here, and I need help identifying this young turtle! I was told it's a stinkpot, and the plastron certainly fits the bill, but the absence of stripes on his head confuses me. Could this be a hybrid, and if so, of what?

Any thoughts or help on the matter would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

That is a young adult female common musk turtle. Stinkpot is also correct.
But they sometimes don't have the head stripes. Hybrid? Its possible but more likely she is just a 'muddy' looking one.

Looks more like a mud to me Kinosternon subrubrum

Sorry, Rick D. had to set me straight. Based on the plastron pectoral scutes that could only be a musk turtle.
