I have been using rocks from outside since they worked well for the set up of my tank and I wouldn't have to buy them... I cleaned them off with water and a little bit of mild hand soap but I've been having problems with moss growing in my tank. I was wondering if that moss growth would be bad for my turtle and if so, how can I get it to stop? Is there some treatment I can put on the rocks too kill the moss? Responses would be deeply appreciated!

It's not "moss" you're referring to but 'algae.' Algae grows almost anywhere but the problem is sunlight. Do you have too much sunlight in there?

I've never used anything to treat it, if this is the case, because it won't hurt your turtles. You can buy tons of solutions at the petshop if you want to spend money.

Get some algae eaters, snails, and maybe just scrub it off now and then. I'm quite sure, however, that it's not "moss." Moss wouldn't grow under water.

algae eaters and snails wouldnt stand a chance against the ever-so-hungry turtles.. maybe you should move your tank where it cant be hit by the sun.. and there are also some anti-algaes available but are NOT advisable because they contain copper which supposedly kills algae and maybe turtles.. so scrubbing them off or moving your tank is your best bet..

I guess that makes sense as far as it being moss. I just associated it because it was right after I put those rocks in and they had moss on them when I cleaned it off. My tank isn't near a window but I do have a heat lamp and a 15 watt tropical uvb lamp. I had both on for 14 hours a day for a while because the tank was too cold and my RES had a respiratory infection. I brought it back down to 12 hours a day but is that still too much 'sunlight'. I just clean it about once a week maybe once every two weeks depending on how bad it gets. I don't mind the algae just as long as it doesn't hurt my turtle. He's my pride and joy. Thanks for the feedback and any additional comments are appreciated!

If you put some copper pennies in the water, it will prevent algae.
