Just some genetic questions.

Teluna Aug 30, 2007 02:29 PM

Hey all
i have some pretty simpel questions, I hope you can help me answer.
Is hypomelanism a simpel ressicive gene in L.G.california? And are there, more than one form of hypomelanism?
I asume that a blizzard california is a double trait consisting of albino and melanistic right? is a melanistic califonia the same as an anerythristic california? And is there any natural accouring melanistic phases?
thanks!
(sorry for any spelling errors, english is not my first language)

Since no one answered your questions I'll try. Yes, hypo is. Yes, more than one hypo. From what I remember, Blizzard is hypermelanism X albino. Melanistic and Anery are different. Yes, there are natural melanistic and hypermelanistic kings in the wild. Melanistic are solid brown or black and hypermelanistic are like normal kings with darker pigment mixed in with the light pigment. The Davis & Mendota black bellies are hypermelanistic and this one from L.A. County is hypermelanistic.

Thanks for your the information. I read somewhere, that blizzard is a selectively bred albino.. are there different types of blizzard? Or is that what is called a snow california?

I'm not really sure about that because I just know the basics. There's a guy named kurby that posts on the main kingsnake forum. You know, the one with all the Florida king morphs. lol You can try asking your question there or try to contact him. He's like the expert here on all the Cal king morphs. Good luck.

Hypomelanism is a simple recesive trait. However there are many different strains that are not compatible. There are several wild populations of kings that tend to have hypos and others that contain hypermelanistics.

No melanistic is not the same anerythiristic. Melanism is more black snake. Anery is with without yellow (or red?) so I guess an anery king would be a desert phase, haha.

yearling hypomelanistic from sacramento county
