Need id of rescued turtles

crocking Jan 31, 2008 01:22 PM

I have 2 turtles. I believe them to be map turtles but they have the red spot on the side of their heads like red ear sliders but they have the shells of map turtles (ridges on the edge and bumps down the middle) The pictures are not that good cause they are shy and would not come out of there shells (no pun intended). The person they were rescued from said they got them down in florida as hatchlings

Both of the turtles pictured seem to be red ear sliders to me. I have an adult female and it looks almost extacly like the one you have pictured. Some the the RES have rigid shells along the back and it gets more noticalbe with their growth. Hope this helps.

I agree, that's a red-eared slider. The raised scutes like that are common in captivity; I believe it comes from a high-protein diet, but don't quote me on it. No map I've ever seen has red post-temporal spots, and their carapacial scutes are not raised like those in the photo- there's just a strong keel down the center of the vertebral scutes.
