pdf with bad aim

jf Mar 07, 2008 09:36 PM

I have a 2yr old female leuc that suddenly cant aim, always short. Her tongue comes out as quick and as far as always. Her cage mate eats fine. As soon as I open the lid she looks up ready to eat. signs of a deficiency?

If her eyes are clear with no lesions, which is the first thing I would look for, she may be just missing a few while you are watching. How is her health otherwise? Is she getting skinny? If she less active and thinning down, then I'd worry more about it. If not, I would just see how she does over time.

Make a check on your feeding program. Sometimes we actually tend to overfeed our dart frogs, and the leucomelas in particular, can become obese, and sometimes even lethargic.

If you are dusting the food, either fruit flies or pinhead crickets with a combination of Herptivite and Rep-Cal/D3 about every other feeding, this is a good supplement that usually works to allay any vitamin deficiencies without over-supplementing with the vitamins that can become toxic in excess amounts. If you are not dusting the food at all, then there is a concern. So give us some more information about what you are feeding, and the general state of the frog in question.

thx patty. She has clear eyes and is very alert. I see them daily and she has thinned a bit, I have seen her thicker. I supplement every other day wit vit/cal that you mentioned. I culture both malagaster(sp) and hydei flies. Since the post I have seen her feed and she does get some but her aim is still short, and some flies take up to 4 flicks of the tongue. I was curious if this is a known symptom of something else.

it could be a calcium deficiency, are you dusting/what are you dusting with/when does it expire?

you were right, I think. After some daily dusting, my leuc is back hitting flies on the first try. thanks, I had a feeling that was it.

glad i could help. most suppliments expire before they are all used up so it's easy to forget to replace them.

"otis my man", woman actually but thanks.

I was referring to a quote from Animal House. My expiration date was fine, I guess the frog just needed more "dust"
