Are Male Common in the Petstore?

Paradon Mar 26, 2008 11:01 AM

I just recently purchase a crested gecko from Petco and the guy said they were all males. When I check on my gecko, there it was, a huge buldge at the base of the tail. I can't believe they were kept together. From my research it said the males will fight if kept together. Anyway, is it common for the petstores to sell male crested geckos? I thought the whole idea of selling females, like leopard geckos, is the females can be kept together without fighting. If male are rare in the petstores, then I'm lucky. Incase I want to breed, I already have a male. Now, all I need is a female.

Females are the rarer commodity in cresteds because most breeders still hold them back. We all know how good pet stores are at taking care of the animals sometimes. It is probably a case of them still being young enough there isn't a problem. (I hope.)

I was apparently "lucky" we just picked out a random baby and ended up with a female. The trend should be changing soon I would think, save for the high end morphs. But what you reported has been echoed here.

petcos get their cresteds in at a very young age, unsexed. what is likely the case in your area is that there is not a high demand for them and they are sitting in the store not being sold until they grow sexually mature. after that, people are probably going to snatch up any females, and you are left with a high number of males, so no, it's not uncommon to find them. it will be harder for you to find a sexed female unless you want to spend $100-200.
