Yellow Problem! Is Cypress bad?

yasin1 Apr 21, 2008 11:54 PM

Hello,

I have a green and a yellow anaconda. I used to keep them in big rubber maid plastic containers with paper bedding that they use for rodents.

Both outgrow their enclosures so I bought giant glass enclosures for both. I also replaced their bedding with cypress for more moisture.

Green seems to be doing fine but yellow stopped eating. I feed them a small rat once a week. Green takes it every time but yellow used to skipp a meal once in a while. She always took it the next week though. She would never eat in front of me but the rat would disappear next day. Now she skipped her third meal and I am getting scared.

So I am thinking its either the new bedding or she does not like the see-through glass enclosure. She was always nippy and stressed anyways so getting out of an opaque enclosure may have stressed her out more.

What do you think guys? Any experiences?

Thanks,
Yasin

I don't have much experience with Cypress Mulch but it does look way too damp and wet for long time use. I'm not sure if that is the picture or if it is literally soaked in there. It may not be the best thing to keep her on. I would recommend newspaper with a giant soaking dish. That is what I use for my greens and they appear to be doing great. As far as the eating it could be she is just a little shy and it may take her a few weeks to get used to her new enviroment. I don't think there is anything to be concerned about but I would change the substrate to prevent scale problems and bacteria breeding. I'm no expert just my experience.

Hey,

The substrate in the picture is wet soil that I put her on to take some pictures a few weeks ago. She is not kept on that.

Thanks tough,

Yasin

I would recommend going back to what worked and wet cypress is always nasty and a great medium for many types of bacteria and is perhaps is bothering the skin of the snake.
