best sounding frogs- advice?

fuzzynuts Jun 09, 2008 09:18 PM

Hello everyone. I recently bought an exo-terra front-opening 18"x18"x24" terrarium and set it up with a false bottom, about 5"-6" of substrate (1st layer gravel, then flourite soil little sphagnum mixed in for air) and a small, shallow pond area. The powerhead Im using is turning the water over about 25 times an hour through some filterfloss and bio-balls, not to mention the rocks the water exits onto. got 2 full-spectrum cf bulbs running and tomorrow im gonna buy some plants. sometime far into the future I will buy a frog. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on frogs that make nice sounds at night, or thoughts on what frogs sound the best. Do tigerleg monkey frogs make noise? This is my first terrarium personally but Ive worked with animals for years in zoos/pet trade. suggestions could include something not TOO hard to find (they have a store here with some nice amphibians, monkeyfrogs, retf, dumpys(?), darts) and nothing that eats fruitflies please.

ALSO any opinions on red/blue/whatever color nightlights for frogs. Ive heard mixed reviews (stim. natural activity vs. frogs maybe can see it/stress inducing). Thanks for your suggestions.

The tetraploid gray treefrog (Hyla versicolor) and the bird-voiced treefrog (H. avivoca) have lovely calls, which they readily deliver in captivity, and would do very well in your setup. I'm not sure how often they are available, though.

thank you. Ill do some further research on these. Any advice about the night light would also be helpful.

Update on the plants I bought an arrowhead vine and a philodendron(sp?) at 10:30 @ walmart. they mustve thought I was crazy!

Zoos with nocturnal herps usually use red lights; they are probably less disturbing to the animals than blue lights would be. I've never used night lights with my animals, so I can't provide any testimonials.

Dendrobates imitator, but they eat flies so that wouldn't work for you. a close second...Vietnamese mossy frogs. they are a great starter frog and you can find some breeders that offer cb ones.

yeh I love those mossy frogs, but my tank isnt exactly set-up proper for one (I dont think). To the best of my knowledge they need room to swim and I only have a small pool of water at the bottom of a little stream, not much exposed water at all really.

Still looking and considering suggestions. They have some monkey frogs at a local pet store but their tank is so eaten up with bugs and mites and gnats and crickets that I was kinda just turned off by the whole scene. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

thats too bad, mossies are really neat frogs. you could always modify your tank. let me think...are you looking purely for call or specific looks and husbandry requirements?

well I guess Im looking for a tree frog....the monkey frogs seem fairly active during the day for a tree frog....and my tank stays around 80% humidity during the day and dips to about 65% at night, temp stays close to 78-80 during the day and dips to 76-75 at night. I have a brom, snakehead vine, two ferns, an elephant ear(maybe, looks like one) and some purple waffle. and some frog moss (growing, I might add). If I could just figure out how to put pics in my posts......but its that tall exo-terra terrarium....like maybe the equiv of 40 gallons? also it would be nice to get his food from my porch light at night, i live in the country in TX and I dont think people spray around here.
