Vivarium or terrarium for american toad?

paulgauguin Jun 18, 2008 08:19 PM

What's the better setup for an American toad? I've had a terrarium for mine for a while now, but was thinking about changing it up. Are they better off in terrariums or would a vivarium suit them better? Also what type of UVB light do they need?

American toads are tough and adaptible. They will do fine in either setup.

If by "vivarium" you mean a part land/ part water setup (technically a "paludarium", then it will be fine but not necessary. Toads like to soak now and again, but they don't need a big pool of water (unless you are trying to breed them). You'll also have a lot more drowned crickets.

Toads do not need UVB.

Toads like to dig. So I'd sit it up with a couple of inches of dirt. I think it's easiest to have a water dish, that way it can be easily removed and the water replaced without much trouble. As someone else said, toads are tough and adaptable. I've found their main interests are digging and food.

And when they mess up a water dish, they don't kid around. It's SEPTIC! You want something you can very easily take out, dump, rinse, and refill. Firebellies use enough water that filters are practical, but true toads don't.
