sexing one and a half year old cwd?

koi_koi13 Jun 24, 2008 10:24 PM

It's name is Vivica, and we've been going back and forth on whether we're a boy or a girl. As I've learned from past posts, coloring is an inaccurate way of sexing. If it may help at all though, it has the orange behind the front legs, a little blue on the lips, and the black eye stripe is a bit faint. We can see where the pores are, but they are very small and I'm not quite sure whether or not we have the bulges. They're very small, if they're even there at all. Like I said, I'm just not sure.
Basically my question is this- are the pores and bulges on the male water dragons as obvious as they are on leopard geckos? Both our male leopards are very obviously males.
We think Viv is a female, so if all else fails, we'll get another female and see whether or not they breed.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

the crest right behind the head is much bigger on a male.

also, i had a female cwd when i was a kid, she laid infertile eggs all the time

it's so much easyer with australian water dragons, red chest means boy.

That wasn't quite my question. I only have one so I can't compare its crest to another one's. I will restate my question- are the pores on male CWDs as blatantly obvious as they are on male leopard geckos? If yes, then I have a female as I suspected. If not, then I will just have to get a known female and see if we get fertile eggs or not. Any real answers to the question I actually asked would be very much appreciated.

ohh well, there are allways pictures on the internet of a proper male crest. also, you'd be better off asking this at reptizone.com, their forum for waterdragons seems active whereas this one is allmost dead. good luck on the femoral pores i honestly have no idea. i just seen your post go unanswered for over a week and figured i'd contribute what i could.

i've added a link and a pic.

the male and female in this pic are the same age.

Good luck

Thank you. The photo was much more helpful than just telling me about the crests. I am fairly certain now that I do indeed have a female as I suspected.

I think we may have a boy. Viv's crest is getting rather large, and we're also getting the "puffy jowls". We'll be sure once we get a known female and see if any eggs hatch. He/she is also coloring up very nicely regardless of sex.
Thanks again for the photo!
