Condesation

notsoscary Jul 19, 2008 12:13 PM

I've had frogs for several years and until recently used a heat lamp and thermostat to regulate the temp (78 degrees F). I read somewhere that heat lamps were not ideal, but there was no real explanation why. I have never liked the way the lamp looks, so I switched to a heat pad.
Since I have done this, there is too much condensation. I am pumping air into the tank (40 gal air pump for a 30 gal tank)and the air humidity is fine (I have a gage). I think what I need to some how heat the glass up, but I cant think of a practical way to do it.

Any ideas?

Asian four lined. Aka foam nest tree frogs. I would know the taxonomy if I saw it. But really, I've got conditions under control. I just have to wipe the terrarium out too much to prevent mold and I don't like the way it looks. Thank you for the post.

The only solution I can think of is to increase room temperature so that there is not a strong differential between in-tank and outside temps. There are anti-condensation products available for glass, but I do not know if they are pet-safe.

Thanks for the post. Does anyone know why I shouldn't use a heat lamp?

Heat lamps can create a very hot spot immediately beneath them, which may injure the frog. They also cause a lot of evaporation in that area, and so can dry out a ventilated tank moreso than indirect or bottom heat might.

Thank you for the post. I moved the heat pad so that the front of the tank bisects the pad. This has cleared up the front pane of glass. So, I think if I get a pad that is bigger than the bottom of my tank, it might solve the problem.
Thank you for the info on the lamp. Those cons might not be too bad for my particular set up, so I could go back to that.
