Anyone using pollen supplement

gregory_t Sep 01, 2008 10:58 PM

Is anyone using bee-collected pollen as a supplement? If so, how are you using it? Sporadically? With every feeding? Also, what format is the pollen in? Powder, Gel, other?

I use bee pollen - fresh refrigerated granules from the health food store. I don't use it more than a sprinkling once every week or two. They don't need much.

bee pollen isn't really as good as people think...picking flowers this summer once I spotted what would be a "naturally occuring serving size": ONE wet "granule" on a leaf.ALL summer I saw ONE wet "granule" in an area with much more flowers and bees than the sahara. I also see where they would likely get their 1-2% insect matter.(it's pollenating in the flower at the time the uro eats it). I don't think I will even be using bee pollen anymore.

I feed hibiscus flowers as treats to all my vegetarian herps. They always have a good amount of pollen on the stamens/anthers. I prefer this to bee collected pollen because you don't know what kind of flower the bee collected pollen comes from. Many reputable uro breeders have noted an increase in appetite after feeding pollen. Hibiscus also helps get a newly aquired stressed animal feeding.
