What kind of map turtle?

blupanther Sep 04, 2008 09:50 AM

A friend surrendered this turtle to me last week when he realized it would be difficult to care for in an aquarium. I have a large(1000 gallon)turtle pond. His brother found it crossing a street here in florida. I haven't been able to find any really good id sites for maps. Most only have one photo of each species taken from a distance. I have eliminated the florida natives, Graptemys barbouri and Graptemys ernsti. Any help with an id would be appreciated. He is loving life in his big pond and gets along fine with my redbellys.

It's a false map turtle (_Pseudogeographica sp._).

It could be _P. pseudogeographica ouachichitensis_, which is sometimes listed as _P. ouachitensis_. The differences are fairly semantic, however, depending on the source. It's all about the thickness of the crescent behind the eye, whether or not there's a spot under the jaw, etc. The thing is that it's not uncommon to have hatchlings from one nest come out looking like different sub-species. I'm rambling...

Oops. I meant it's _Graptemys pseudogeographica_.
Could be _G. p. oachitensis_ aka _G. oachitensis_.

Yep, you're definitely right, once I had a specific species to google, plenty of pics came up, thanks.
