Glandular infection in female Jackson...

babysdaddy Sep 16, 2008 06:47 PM

Hi guys. It started about 3-4 weeks ago as a swelling of the temporal/maxillary area with some crustiness at the corners of her mouth. I was treatng it like stomatitis. Cleaning and debriding the effcted area with dilute chlorhex. Today the crustiness returned (the temporal swelling never went away). As I was cleaning it, it began to ooze a lovely thick and purulent green secretion from (what looked like) a duct in the upper rear corner of her mouth. So I evacuated the remains of it. I think it might have been an infected salivary gland. Are there any other glands in that area of female Jacksons? Has anyone ever heard of this in Jacksons or any other species? Or do Jackson's have any specific glands in that region?

Jackson's and some other species have a "temporal" gland at the corher of the mouth. Yes, they can get heavily infected and this can spread along the cheek toward the eye too. The gland itself needs to be flushed thoroughly as the infections can be very hard to clear. Systemic antibiotics in addition to clearing the gland are probably needed. I've also read that increasing the vit. C level in feeder gutloads can help prevent recurrance.

I'm betting that the purulent green secretion is pseudamonas. If it is it won't likely go away without being cleaned out properly by a vet and the chameleon put on an appropriate antibiotic.

Did you notice if the secretion had a smell something like rotten grapes?

My chameleon had a mouth infection which sounds kinda similiar to what you're talking about..Take her to the vet and the vet will be able to give you some antibotics..My cham. cut his mouth on a cricket leg I think that caused a cut in his mouth which gave him a pretty bad infection but he is long past that now..He never had any green stuff coming out of his mouth but had a white growth that the vet had to pop..It was also in the corner of his mouth..It'd be best to let the vet deal with it..I'm willing to pay whatever amount to keep my cham with me..No other cham could replace him..

I hope this helps some even though it sounds to not be completely the same thing..

Actually there was a slight "cheesy" kind of smell. I already flushed the duct; still seems to be healing. No more swelling or discharge, good appetite and normal behavior. If by next week, it is not completely resolved... off to the vet we go!
